A new face

By: Anna | March 31st, 2008

Well, hello there!
My name is Anna, I’m twenty-one years old, live in Munich and will be your new blogger about all news concerning the VfB Stuttgart.
Considering yesterday’s result, I could have picked a better moment to start writing, but the VfB seems to have developed a trend of starting badly and then slowly sneaking up and I hope to keep it that way, too.

Maybe I should try to sum up what brought me here in the first place? Actually I live in the wrong city to be a Stuttgart fan – they don’t seem to be the kind of club that has a country-wide fan base, and living in Munich, there’s always the influence of the ever-present FC Bayern (unless you’re born into a family of TSV 1860 fans, but that’s a completely different story).

Fact is I didn’t receive any football-wise upbringing at all, got swept into it by the giant wave that was the 2006 world cup and, like many others, got into the rather unusual situation of being able to choose a club instead of just growing up into it. At the beginning (I’m going to be honest here, even though I like to deny it every once in a while) I didn’t so much choose a club but a certain blond goalkeeper, though.
But you can’t follow a single player without knowing his club and I got interested and fascinated by the team and at some point in January, had the silly idea to go and watch the last match of the 2006/07 season live at the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion.
I had hoped for them to do well, but like many others, had never expected things to turn out this wonderful and if I had liked them before, now I was in love.

a little bit of last season Stuttgart nostalgiaTo cut a long story short, all of a sudden we were champion [sorry, I just had to enter a celebration picture here, sometimes nostalgia gets the best of me], Hildebrand left, but my heart stayed there and here I am now, almost one season later, fretting about our sometimes so confused and out-of-place looking midfield, wondering when (if?) Khedira and Tasci will be back at last year’s shape, writing alternately love letters and death threats to our captain, wishing the best to our new goalkeeper baby and still crying over how tragic things went with Raphael Schäfer and hoping that Gomez will indeed stay for another year while I secretly wish it’d be at least two (there will be a lot of writing about Mario in general, be warned. It must be the goals, and maybe, but only maybe, also the blue eyes).

So, that’s my little story, the next entries will contain some more football – I hope to be back tomorrow or the day after with a report about last weekend’s match against Rostock, which I had the joy to see live (well, the “joy” part obviously only applies for the second half-time only, but more about that later).

Anna! *gives giant hugs* So great to see you here, and to see the VfB get representation. (Them and their alligator. Are you going to do a post on the alligator? You should do a post on Timo and the alligator, in fact: the first two things that made me fond of Stuttgart.)

Hey Anna! Welcome to the Offside.

Angharad: I wrote a post a while back, which includes a few pics of Timo and Fritzle, and you can check it out until Anna comes up with a fresh one.;-)

You have been “writing alternately love letters and death threats to our captain”? Wow, that’s cool.
We get a new sponsor and a new blogger at the same day, cool.

    Hey Anna!

Fellow VfB fan here! I’ve been a fan since die jungen Wilde and was so elated last year when we became Deutscher Meister. I thought about doing one of these theoffside.com blogs myself, but I don’t know if I’d write very often. I’m glad you are contributing and I will defintely be on here commenting on everything! :)
Anyways Herzlich Willkommen und Macht’s gut!

    Or maybe because he’s half-Spanish. :-)

But then, I was just reading the online version of Bild the other day and happened to stumble across an article where it did wrote about his girlfriend (something about the two know each other since school). Ouch. :( Eh yeah, I have a soft spot for Mario as well.

Anyhow, hello Anna! Great there is a Stuttgart blog up and running here in the Offside. Fellow Stuttgart fan over here. I will be checking in here now and then.

Yay, Stuttgart coverage in English! I used to live in Stuttgart (mid-70s, dad in the Army) and follow VfB as much as I can, but I speak next to no German.

Until Pardo and Osorio put every VfB game on the Spanish stations in the US, I had only seen one game (vs Chelsea in the CL pre-Roman). It’s better now, but only if you speak Spanish, which I barely do.

So welcome, and if anyone know of other English language Stuttgart coverage, I’d love to hear about it.

Let me dust myself off after the raiding party has run to greet you and left me trampled. I think I may start every one of my posts saying I’m a 21 year old woman who’s into soccer. That way, I’ll have more comments than chris over on the Roma blog. At any rate, welcome from the Portuguesian blog.

Hey, I came here for Mario Gomez.

Also, I think I’m vice-chair of the official Offside meet & greet committee. Or at least I’m supposed to be.

So, as far as I understand it, I can’t directly reply to comments? Okay, so I’ll have to do it this way.

First off, a huge thank you to everyone for the warm welcome. I’m so excited to be here!

Fitz, I’m very much in love with our dark-haired striker at the moment, so as you see I’m neither limited to hair colour nor the position they play, as long as they play for my club and are good ;)

Angha, I’ll try to write something about Fritzle. Did you know he got a new car before the match against Rostock? And NO, we’re keeping our nutcase captain! At least until he decides to go insane the next time.

Parker, well, I didn’t really write them (or at least didn’t send any). The thing is, Meira is an awesome player and when he’s giving his best I worship the ground he walks on, but then he sometimes has these moments that make me wonder if that’s really him on the pitch or some tactically lously, violently fouling clone.

chris, I’m glad that he’d be welcome if he decided to go to Rome, but I hope you understand that I’d gladly keep him in Stuttgart for a while.

diana, the best explanation probably is “because he’s awesome.” That sums everything up, right? And I’m not even that devastated about him being in a relationship, I think Sylvia is very adorable and him still dating the girl he met at school just fits his character perfectly. As long as he’s happy, I’m fine with it :)

Greg, I’m very flattered by the broad response and certainly didn’t expect it. Maybe they’re all just here for Gomez?

“We could probably start a separate Mario Gomez Offside.”

I’ll start writing an entry soon about his situation and the several rumours and statements that were given lately, so every fan of a club that’s involved can come here and claim him. For now, he’s still ours (I was very tempted to write “our precious”. That’s worrying, isn’t it?).

Agreed, Anna. He’s still ours. :) Us Stuttgart fans, I mean. ‘Our precious’…no comment. :P
