Bayer Leverkusen – VfB Stuttgart 3:0

By: Anna | April 15th, 2008

Just some short notes from the match because there are things a fan doesn’t like to think about for longer, and losing is on top of that list (how on earth do Cottbus fans survive?)

Four things I’ve learned from this match (in a match like this, you can’t learn as much as five things):

There apparently is a trend of self-injuring while actually trying to foul someone else. First it was Magnin, now Hitzlsperger follows it with attempting to tackle Castro, but then ending up with a flesh-wound himself that had to be stitched up with twelve stitches. He’ll miss a few matches.

Not every young goalkeeper is a René Adler, as a newspaper recently put it. Rumours already spread about Schäfer returning to the goal against his former club, Nürnberg.

It is indeed All About Gomez. Not so much that he’s the only one who scores, but when he’s missing, everyone else seems to forget how to place the ball behind the line, too.

We do not really want to play Champions League. At least that’s how the players are behaving on the pitch.

In other words, I didn’t even notice we have English weeks now. They’ll be playing against Nürnberg tomorrow, a match that will have to be won in order to stay in touch with the international places. Last season we couldn’t beat them, this first leg we did – maybe because we had their goalkeeper, so let’s see. We still have him, but will he play?

I just checked the current table and found the answer:
Stuttgart lost 11 and Cottbus lost 13 games. Not too much of a difference. Being a Duisburg fan is no fun though. They already lost 17 matches. :-)

By forgetting the first half of the season. Huh. What? I was dead at the time.

And focusing on the recent heroics in topping the best teams in the league and climbing valliantly out of relegation (4 pts clear so far).

But mostly the forgetting of the first half of the year. Minus Dennis Sorenson because he was awesome.

Really? I’d thought it’d be more of a difference. Ah well, losing always sucks.

“By forgetting the first half of the season.”
Sounds like a great idea. I guess I’ll follow that strategy.

    Same here. ;)

I had that feeling too, ever since Gomez is on the sidelines. Have we depended on him too much? After looking at the scorelines of this match and the previous one against Hamburg (where we won 1-0), I am suspecting…maybe.

I’m afraid so. Looking at the other strikers, Cacau is the only one who’s really doing his job. But even though he’s good, he can’t do all the work on his own. Marica is, even though it hurts to admit that, a disappointment so far. Let’s hope that once he’s been there a year things will get better (he scored some nice goals for his national team, so it can’t be the lack of talent). Radu… well, he’s going to return to Wolfsburg and that’s about it. And Manuel Fischer is simply too young. So either we’ll get ourselves another striker or try to get some special scoring-treatment for Marica. The chances are there, after all, there’s just that inability to actually score the goal. On the other hand, both Frank Rost and René Adler are close to world class goalkeepers, so maybe we should wait for a few more matches…
