By: 21 | January 27th, 2009
Hopes of defeating Bayern München in the DFB Pokal ended quickly as Jürgen Klinsmann’s club destroyed VfB 5-1. The Bavarians completely overwhelmed VfB taking a three goal lead into the break and cruising to the end in what could have been a significantly worse score if they had pressed. Germany international started the outpouring, scoring fourteen minutes in from twelve minutes with Franck Ribéry doubling the margin two minutes later with a close range drive. Completely in a state of shock, VfB looked done at that stage and dug deeper in the hole when Luca Toni scored two minutes before the half. At the break a number of changes were made but the day was done as they were was no coming back as Bayern completely controlled the run of play. Ten minutes after the break Bastian Schweinsteiger scored from the spot with Franck Ribéry setting up Zé Roberto adding another goal before the hour to take it to 5-0 before they decided to ease back. Mario Gómez scored a consolation goal with six minutes remaining as the match ended 5-1 for Bayern.
Markus Babbel has yet to issue comments on the match as it has just concluded but they will need to re-focus after such a beating.
