I am convinced that we can win!

By: 21 | January 26th, 2009

“I am convinced that we can win!”, said Markus Babbel of tomorrow’s DFB Pokal match against Bayern München. He added:

“Of course we’re looking forward to the game,”

“Finally, the waiting is over. We have worked hard and the players are happy that things are getting back to normal after tough winter preparations. We have a game ahead of us that I believe it is worth doing everything in our power to win.

“It certainly won’t be easy but I am convinced that we can win! To do so we will have to approach the game in motivated and disciplined fashion. The important thing is to be confident about the job at hand. If we do so, Bayern are also vulnerable.

“I of course hope that we can decide the game in our favour within the 90 minutes because we would then go fresher into the game against Gladbach on Saturday but we would have no problem going the full 120 minutes of even into a penalty shoot-out. We want to progress and to be honest, I don’t care how. The only important thing is that we are still in the competition at the end of the game.”

For tomorrow’s game at the Neckarstadion (Mercedes-Benz Arena), Cacau, Timo Gebhart, Ludovic Magnin and Sebastian Rudy are all out with injuries.

Finally…it is back! After the 2-2 draw against Bayern in the league before the winter break, we are meeting them again. In the DFB-Pokal. Let’s hope the boys can put up a good game against the defending champions of the cup.

I am still catching up on the football news I had missed since visiting my relatives on these two days. Quite a lot! :) It is Chinese New Year (it began yesterday). We have two days of public holiday over here.

I’ve been to a lot of business functions related to the Chinese New Year myself as well. I do not think you have missed much in Bundesliga news the last week as it has been quiet.

Are you able to watch today’s match?

It’s not on here. But the usual league matches will be back, starting with the Hamburg-Bayern Munich match.

It is kind of weird, considering I was switching the channels over the weekend and there was the Coppa Italia. Because when it comes to cup competitions (apart from the Champions League and the UEFA Cup), we get the FA Cup from England here only. This is the first time I know we have the Coppa Italia on here. No DFB-Pokal. Not sure how the TV rights work here but, that is the case. We get the Bundesliga, but no DFB-Pokal. It is the same thing with Spanish football here where there is only the La Liga coverage, but no Copa del Rey thrown in as well.

I know the DFL had been trying to reach out to its international market and I appreciate that. I was actually all over the moon when I learned that there’s going to be the Bundesliga on the pay-TV here (this was slightly more than a month before the league kicked off for the current season) for the current season. Considering the beginning date of the current season even coincided on a special date for me – my birthday (15 August).

But, this is definitely puzzling for me. Oh well. It’s like, this is an all-Bundesliga encounter between the Vfb and the defending champions of the cup in Bayern Munich. That is something exciting already.
