Last goal saves draw for Schwaben

By: 21 | February 15th, 2009

A goal by Thomas Hitzlsperger with only three minutes remaining gave VfB a 3-3 draw against Hannover 96.

Die Schwaben looked to heading for an easy victory taking a two margin early. Mario Gómez opened the scoring at the seventh minute as he accepted Thomas Hitzlsperger’s pass and sent the ball in from inside the box. With the match going at a lightning fast pace Martin Lanig doubled the margin converting from the center of the box. However host 96 didn’t give up and two minutes before the break Jiří Štajner latched onto the ball in close from a corner and the match was 2-1. Still pressing two minutes into added time Jacek Krzynówek’s free kick found the back of the net and the match was level at the break. The action continued after the re-start but neither side broke through until five minutes remained and Mikael Forssell accepted Jan Rosenthal’s cross before pounding the ball in. However die Schwaben fought back and maintained Markus Babbel’s six-match unbeaten streak with Thomas Hitzlsperger drilling the ball into the net from seventeen meters out for a 3-3 final score.

It was a tough match but in the end the draw will be sufficient as VfB gets ready for Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday in the UEFA Cup.
