Marcus Babbel in-charge

Per the Bundesliga web-site Vfb’s new boss Marcus Babbel answered questions on the clubs direction in a very matter-of-fact manner.

Markus Babbel, you’ve gone almost overnight from apprentice to team boss. How do you see the situation now at VfB Stuttgart?

It was a surprise, albeit a pleasant one. AT the same time, it is a difficult phase, but the team has potential. It’s solely up to me to convince the team of its strength. That’s not an easy job.

How will you go about it?

It’s all about clearing the players’ heads. We’re starting at ground zero. I’ll be watching closely to see who’s working with me.

What sort of football do you stand for?

VfB has always played attacking football, and that’s what we’re aiming to get back to.

Why are you team boss with Rainer Widmayer named as coach?

To get my coaching licence, I still need to fill out and send off a few forms. Some time I will do that, because I see my future in the game. But I learned a lot as Armin Veh’s assistant coach. I shall work closely with Rainer Widmayer, but I’ll be selecting the team.

On Thursday, you’re away to Sampdoria in the UEFA Cup. What will be your feelings as you travel to Italy?

It’ll be like my first Bundesliga game as a player. I shall be nervous, I’ll be thrown in at the deep end and for me it’ll be sink or swim.

Can you tell us yet what players you’ll be picking?

Sebastian Rudy from our second team will be training with us. But I don’t know yet which of our up-and-coming talents will be joining us. After all, our present squad is better than their present Bundesliga position.
