match of the year against Standard Liège
By: 21 | December 18th, 2008Markus Babbel left little doubt of the importance of this evenings UEFA Cup match against Belgium side Standard Liège when he said that:
“For the fans the match of the year was on Saturday (Bayern München), for us it’s this coming Thursday.”
Cutting straight to the facts Die Roten will be without Swiss International Ludovic Magnin and Matthieu Delpierre is in doubt. Standard Liège’s well traveled leader, László Bölöni, is without his Brazilian contingency of Digão, Dante Bonfim Costa and Marcos Camozzato, with the later still a possibility.
Standard Liège has plowed through the competition and while few talked of them before hand, should be considered one of the favourites to advance in the next round of play. Excluding CSKA Moscow and Udinese, no side has dominated their dominated their group with as consistent formidable play as the Belgians. Any defensive lapse by VfB will be exploited by Standard Liège without a moment of hesitation and they possess an attacking side that is one of the best in the competition at this stage and I would not be surprised if they made it through to Istanbul in the spring. Pushing forward the likes of Serbian international Milan Jovanović, Igor De Camargo, Wilfried Dalmat and Dieumerci Mbokani will create a multitude of problems and must be kept in check with an active, hard tackling midfield.
Given VfB is presently sitting in third place of their group, in a optimal situation they will want a victory coupled with a Sevilla – Sampdoria draw that would see Die Roten jump to second in the group.

We get Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Cup round of 32. The reigning champions of the trophy. The draw has already been made.
Argh. Just when I don’t want us to face them.
