Rant Box: VfB Stuttgart v Werder Bremen

By: Pete | October 4th, 2009

I have to apologize; like the team I stumbled a bit with a game every 3 days. A bit late posting this but better late than never ja?

Big game today; the green whites have looked strong all year domestically and even more so in European play. It’s also yet another test to compete against a team we’ll most likely be battling for Euro competition next year too. I think logic would tell us that it would seem they would struggle this year after losing Diego to Juve, but Özil has slotted in far nicer than anybody could have imagined; he’s really blossoming.

Hleb will be out again; this muscle problem is a bit more persistent and worrying than I first thought. Other than that should be a similar squad to that of the other day, but I’d expect Schieber to start.

Comment during and after the game. Voice those ever insightful opinions here. Up Stuttgart-

I tuned in late and didn’t see the goal, but generally Stuttgart are slicing open the Werder defense quite well, without getting a clear shot on goal though.

Probably one of the worst displays of passing and creativity I’ve seen…Stuttgart seem to have 2 ideas in mind: Dribble down the flank and pass it back to the full back to cross or dribble down the middle and pass it straight to the feet of a Bremen player.

    Babbel’s time is over…

Really? Do we think this is Babbel’s fault? Interesting based on the inspiration he had on the team last year.

Is it because he is side-tracked with his coaching certificate?

At any rate, the problem to me seems to be that we are missing that central creative player that sets other teams apart: Misimovic, Ribery, Diego, Ozil, etc etc etc. No?

I don’t think the fault lies solely with Babbel, but we aren’t rightly going to fire all the players are we? The tactics are not working for the players we have. We may have a creative midfield player in Hleb, but he has been injured and off-form so that really does us no good. Our players seem unmotivated at this point. I really am thankful to Babbel for what he did last season, but the wave of euphoria that he started last season has not come through in this season at all.
