ruling on Markus Babbel by DFL

By: 21 | December 16th, 2008

The Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) has announced that VfB Markus Babbel will be allowed continue coaching VfB till the end of the season but will not provide an extension thereafter. Through a Deutschen Fußball-Bund (DFB) circular technical manager Matthias Sammer stressed this is to maintain professionalism and technical knowledge:

“It should be normal that we maintain a high quality of technical knowledge and that requires an extensive, lengthy engagement in completing the football coaching course.”

Unfortunately due to the length of the program, Markus Babbel will not be able to complete the program prior to the start of the next season. The club has yet to indicate how they will treat the matter.

According to a Reuters report, the club will only discuss the matter after the UEFA Cup match on Thursday – http://football.uk.reuters.com/bundesliga/news/LG235059.php

I remember that there has been special cases in England’s Premier League before. Middlesbrough manager (or coach, if you like, given they actually call it manager in England) Gareth Southgate is one example. Back then after his former manager Steve McClaren was appointed to be in charge of the England squad (he is now at FC Twente, Schalke coach Fred Rutten’s former employers) and Southgate was eventually being promoted from originally the club captain to become the new manager. Back then there were discussions that given he did not have the required coaching badges and the English FA will not sanction his appointment. But he was eventually given the go-ahead and became the first player-manager managing a top-flight side in seven years.

Looking at Middlesbrough’s position at the moment in the Premier League, the club is doing alright (12th out of 20 places currently). It is Southgate’s second season in charge of his former club.

I can understand the DFL and the DFB’s intentions, but then…I don’t know, I look at the example in England I was talking about earlier. And thinking how Markus Babbel has been since he took over from Armin Veh. If there is really no way out (looks like it is the case), then the club have to start looking for a new coach. Just when I am actually getting optimistic of the club under Babbel…never mind.

Parker, you take the words out of my mouth. *nodding in agreement* I thought I will not be able to say that in the open, and you did.

It is a odd ruling but from my source it has more to do about the business of coaching certificates that actual quality of education. It is not like he is going to “fail.”

21, I am still confused. Oh by the way, you had talked of giving more coverage on the historical aspects of it. Not that I am demanding it given maybe you want to put up a preview of the UEFA Cup match, but at least I can try to make sense what is really happening. I don’t know, maybe things are different in Germany than they are in England when it comes to coaching certificates for former national players and professionals.

Considering the Bundesliga is now in the winter break with the exception of the clubs who are still playing in the UEFA Cup, what is going to kind of dominate are the transfer rumours. Already I had read that Bernd Schuster has been linked to the VfB job after the DFL ruling on Babbel. Since what I read of the Schuster rumours came from Sport-Bild…me taking it as a pinch of salt.

Diana; I think the historical idea is a great one especially as we have a month off. I’m try to put up the preview now but have had a hard time with browser and signing-on. With any luck the profile will be up shortly (I hope).
