Schwaben out of UEFA Cup
By: 21 | February 27th, 2009
VfB’s UEFA Cup efforts ended with a disappointing 2-1 loss to defending champions Zenit Saint Petersburg Thursday evening.
VfB was aggressive early as both Mario Gómez and Cacau threatened but could not close out the final strike. Unfortunately the deadlocked was broken in the favour of the visitors a few minutes before the half when Igor Semshov who volleyed Danny’s cross past Jens Lehmann to make it 1-0. Needing an offensive spark Markus Babbel brought in Elson and Timo Genhart on the hour and the impact was quick. After coming close, Timo Genhart made his way through the Zenit defenders before scoring with ten minutes remaining. However six minutes later it was all over as Danni lobbed the ball over an on-rushing Jens Lehmann to Viktor Fayzulin who directed the ball in for a 2-1 defeat.

I think it’s good for VFB since that we can focus on one side now.

Well, I hope you’re right with the focus. The Bundesliga is wide open and anything can happen in the race.
