VfB fights back to play Bavarians to a draw
By: 21 | December 14th, 2008
A capacity home crowd witnessed VfB fight back with a late Sami Khedira strike to earn a 2-2 draw against Bayern München. The victory extends die Roten unbeaten streak to four matches and leaves them at tenth place with twenty-five points, one point behing Wolfsburg as the Bundesliga heads to winter break.
In a match bathed with hard tackling, both sides started intensely and were committed not to give the other any space on the pitch. With Mario Gómez on the bench given his lingering injury, Ciprian Marica was handed the responsibility in the attack but after a hard challenge the former Shakhtar Donetsk man had to leave and Gómez was pressed into duty. VfB pressed but on the strength of Bavarian ‘keeper Michael Rensing they were kept off the score sheet until added-time when Sami Khedira found the back of the net as he capitalized on a Jan Šimák corner that had been flicked on by Matthieu Delpierre.
The lead was short lived Tim Borowski drew the match level only three minutes into the half and he scooped in a rebound from a Bastian Schweinsteiger shot. Bayern took the lead with twenty-four minutes remaining Tim Borowski was the provider once again as fed Luca Toni for a point-blank effort. Markus Babbel called upon Turkish international Yıldıray Baştürk with fourteen minutes remaining and a further five minutes nineteen year-old Julian Schieber was called upon with for maturity beyond his years. In a critical error with five minutes left in regulation Massimo Oddo was shown a straight red for a poor challenge of Christian Träsch that will surely attract disciplinary action from the DFB. VfB was rewarded for its tenacity as the rebound off Cacau’s corner was drilled to the back of the net by Sami Khedira for his second of the net and to bring the match to its final 2-2 conclusion.
Following the match Markus Babbel said:
“I am very satisfied with my team, but not quite so happy about the result. We had the opportunities to decide that game in the first half. In the end we earned the equaliser with a very determined display. I’m very proud of my team.”

Watched it a few hours ago here. Amazing. When I looked at the timing of the equaliser (which made it 2-2), wow. Here’s to more of the same in the UEFA Cup on Thursday.

Oh, the winter break. Good and bad for me actually.
Good because I had been trying to kind of recap how the Bundesliga is going so far. Also trying to recap how it has been for Stuttgart, especially since Markus Babbel stepped in. I just hope the dispute of him over his coaching badges (I read that he still has to attend courses given he does not have the full qualifications yet) will be sorted out soon. Or else that will be something occupying the winter break.
Bad that the winter break is here because of no football. But at least Stuttgart will be playing one more match in the UEFA Cup before it is all over for now.

A overall recap is interesting because of individual perspective of the game and their are so many intriguing sides. I think one the best stories is how VfB has responded to Markus but if you move beyond our side, I enjoy how feisty BVB have played. I think you also have to discuss how Köln, Eintracht Frankfurt and Hannover 96 are playing intelligently within their means and the entire bottom five or six look to be heading to a slug-fest.

Wow. More ideas for my blog. Thanks for those suggestions, 21. I had been reading around, trying to get ideas. I had did recaps in the previous season on my blog actually. During the winter break and reviewing the entire season. Back then, I looked at the events which dominated the league up till the mid-season and at the end of it. Me will be doing the same this time, spreading out across the clubs in the Bundesliga.
There’s also Hoffenheim. The story of the season so far for me. The mid-season in review is not complete without them. I know us and them can be considered local rivals given both clubs located in the same state, but it is just…they are a real breath of fresh air to the Bundesliga. I was reading on the Sport1.de website (actually on its blog) that there will be a feature of the club on the BBC World Service next Saturday. We can receive the BBC World Service here on the radio and it will be exciting. I do listen to the BBC World Service at times myself.
So my own mid-season in review may have to wait a little longer. It will be tough, given I am also still trying to get ideas on how the year has been for the German national team.

It is all about perspective in my opinion and how much history you are aware of. You should speak with many of the new bloggers as they will give you very honest stories of their clubs and what it means to them. Maybe even do a series of interviews with them – you might like it because it’ll give you a different perspective.
As far as the “big story”, I was emailing Otto of Gladbach and he was bursting over with pride on one of their U-19’s featuring in the play this weekend and Tucker feels the same with how tough his clubs defensive play is. So many great stories -

It’s always a work in progress for me when it comes to the history of the Bundesliga. Like I used to say before I only started to follow the Bundesliga after the 2006 World Cup, so there is a lot for me to read up on.
Anyhow, there is a possibility Markus Babbel may only be the VfB coach until the end of the current season. The message from the DFL and DFB is that there will be no special exemptions on former national team players seeking coaching badges. The exemption only lasting until 30 June 2009.
Correct me if I am wrong, I used to read that there used to be special exemptions on former national team players and former professional players. The DFB sporting director Matthias Sammer was like saying last week or something that there will be no exemptions this time. I know Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann stood up for Babbel ahead of the Stuttgart-Bayern match on the coaching badges issue.
Anyhow, I really hope Babbel can continue to the VfB coach. I do notice differences at the VfB since he stepped in.

Or looks like it is not possible for Babbel to continue into the new season. Well.

Yes, the ruling is out and does not look good. Odd statement from Matthias Sammer since he benefited from an extension a few years back.
Maybe I should add more historical aspects to the coverage – would anyone else enjoy that?

You have one vote here, 21.
‘Odd statement from Matthias Sammer since he benefited from an extension a few years back.’
And Klinsmann himself too. A change of ruling at the DFB and the DFL? Maybe there is something I am not aware of.Posted from
