VfB soars to defeat Standard Liège 3-0

By: 21 | December 19th, 2008

Answering the call, VfB soared to a shocking 3-0 defeat of Standard Liège. The victory sends Markus Babbel’s side to the next stage of the UEFA Cup. In a patient display, Sami Khedira opened the scoring five minutes into the match off a through-ball by Ciprian Marica. With the match level at the break German international Mario Gómez provided Roberto Hilbert a set-up, to which he drove to the back of the net four minutes after the restart. With eighteen minutes remaining Tricolorii capped Marica then finished it off 18 minutes from time.

After the match Markus Babbel said of the victory:
“I’m highly satisfied with the result and in particular the manner in which the team approached the game tonight. They took complete control of the game after getting the early goal. There were a number of players at the limit during the second half but they still gave all they had to offer. You have to praise that. The players need to regenerate quickly now and enjoy a nice Christmas. They don’t have a lot of time. We want to make a real go of things after the winter break and they lads know what’s expected from them.”
