we were in fear of them

By: 21 | January 28th, 2009

Following yesterdays humbling defeat to Bayern München in the DFB Pokal the club issued the following comments:

Markus Babbel: “Congratulations to Bayern. They highly deserved to win. My team seemed to be somehow blocked, somehow paralysed. We were in fear of them and failed to shake off the respect we had for them throughout the game. That’s how we lost so conclusively.”

Thomas Hitzlsperger: “We went into the game optimistically but soon saw the difference between training and a game. We were faced by a very good Bayern team but we lacked everything you need in such a cup game – courage, fight, commitment. That crept through the whole team. We need to put the defeat behind us quickly, although that will be difficult. We will need to show a reaction to that on Saturday.”

Mario Gomez: “We said before the game that we would need to be compact and aggressive if we were to win. We failed to do that and in the end they taught us a lesson. We were up for the match but when you’re 2-0 down after 16 minutes it’s very difficult. We imagined things would be different but you have to separate cup and Bundesliga.”

Its clear from the performance that these comments rang true in the performance. VfB inexplicably played with fear and were overwhelmed.

Gomez scored! As a DFB fan, I had forgotten what that looked like.
