A Stuttgartot is kaphatja a Győr az UEFA Kupában
By: Anna | August 1st, 2008
Now, I don’t speak Hungarian, but I suppose that means something like “The FC ETO Györ is up against the VfB Stuttgart for the second qualification round for the UEFA-Cup.”
ETO Györ finished third in the Hungarian League last season and took on Georgian club FC Zestafoni in the first qualification round.
That’s about all I know about this club, and Stuttgart’s officials don’t know much more than that, either:
“Personally, I don’t know the team at all. But we’ll watch the club and get ourselves some video material”, said coach Armin Veh, Horst Heldt added, “the club is an unknown name for me.”
Both emphasize that they want to reach the next round, though. Let’s hope we’ll know more in two weeks. The first leg match will be at 14. August in Stuttgart, the second leg is going to be played at 28. August (in, I suppose, Györ, if that’s the name of the city).

With an only a limited knowledge of Hungary, I can at least say that yes, Györ is the name of the city, and it’s in the northwest–perhaps 2-2.5 hours by train from Budapest (I suppose this makes it a little easier to travel to, especially if a fan can take an ICE through to Vienna at least). Headline writers across the world are now hoping Samuel Eto’o transfers there.

14 August! It’s the eve of my birthday. What an early birthday present indeed.
Anyhow, Györ is definitely a city. Wikipedia told me that. And what we need to know about the football club itself – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gy%C5%91ri_ETO_FC The club name has been changed many times in the past actually.
According to the Wikipedia page on Györ on the section entitled ‘Sports’, Győri ETO FC has a glorious history in Hungarian football. On the Wikipedia page of the club, its biggest moment in European football is during the 1964-65 European Cup (predecessor to the Champions League) when as Vasas ETO Györ, progressed all the way to the semifinals, being stopped there by Benfica.
This is what I like about the UEFA Cup…finding out about clubs which is unknown to many.
A sense of novelty.Posted from

Yikes. Luke, I didn’t saw your comment. We both posted the same thing about Györ.
Regarding what you said about Samuel Eto’o…LOL!

Eto’o to where? I thought he went to a club in mid-Asia.

Ah, thanks to both of you. I should have checked the page before. But the team should be doable for Stuttgart, don’t you think?

Parker, the last I know, Eto’o is still with Barcelona. Though they said yesterday that major clubs are chasing for his signature.
Anna, regarding your question…I hope so.
