Champions League drawing results are in

By: Pete | August 28th, 2009

Let me start out by saying I’ve just joined theoffside team and this is my first post on here (as you can probably tell since the last post was in May.) Bear with me if I stumble out of the gate but I aim to update posts early and often. So let’s get things rolling…

The Champions League group stage drawing was yesterday and all things considering VfB made out quite well. Joining them in Group G are Spanish side Sevilla, Rangers, and mighty Unirea Urziceni of Romania. At a quick glance one would think Sevilla would (and should) make quick work of the group with many tipping Stuttgart to come in second and qualify for the knockout stages.

This is pretty much the best case scenario for Stuttgart; one of the softest groups out there gives them a very real possibility of advancing. Make no mistake about it there are potential pitfalls (a Cinderella Romanian team, Rangers at home) but one has to feel good about their chances.

Here’s what the schedule looks like. What are your thoughts on the drawing?

16 September 2009 home v. Rangers
29 September 2009 away v. Unirea Urziceni
20 October 2009 home v. Sevilla
4 November 2009 away v. Sevilla
24 November 2009 away v. Rangers
9 December 2009 home v. Unirea Urziceni

Great draw for them and exciting for German football. It is a very real possibility we could get all 3 teams into the knock out rounds.

Absolutely. The more teams they can send through to the qualifying rounds, the greater the possibility they take that 4th CL spot from Italy as well.
